Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat from the air outside your home.
This heat energy can be used to heat your water and provide this to your radiators, underfloor heating systems and warm air convectors in your home.
Air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air in the exact same way that a refrigerator will extract heat from its interior and can even pull heat from the air with temperatures as low as -15°C.
Although they aren’t as eco-friendly as other renewable energy sources due to the fact they require electricity to run, but the heat that they gather is constantly being renewed naturally.
What are the benefits of air source heat pumps?
During the winter they may require being on constantly to effectively heat your home due to needing to pull heat from a lower temperature.
Sometimes you will also notice that your radiators aren’t as hot to touch as they are with a traditional boiler and central heating system.
How do air source heat pumps work?
Air source heat pumps work by absorbing heat at lower temperatures and condensing or cooling it to its liquid form.
The liquid then passes through a compressor where the temperature is raised to be transferred around the house via the heating system and hot water circuits already in place.
Air to Water Systems
Air to water systems distribute heat via your central heating system.
These work much more efficiently than traditional boiler systems would at their lower operating systems and makes them much more suitable for underfloor heating systems and larger radiators.
Air to Air Systems
Air to air systems produce heated air which is then recirculated using fans to heat your home.
While these can operate as an adequate source of heating for your home, they’re incredibly unlikely to be able to provide you with hot water in addition to heating.
System maintenance
Air source heat pump systems usually come with a warranty of two or three years, with workmanship warranties extending this up to 10 years (although many manufacturers also offer warranty extension options for an additional fee).
With regular maintenance, you can expect your ASHP to operate for around 20 years and in some cases even longer. A routine check by yourself on a yearly basis and a more thorough and in depth check by a professional every 3 to 5 years should suffice for this.
Your installer should keep and leave written details of any maintenance checks that you should be taking to ensure that everything is working correctly.
On a yearly basis, you will be advised to carry out a yearly check on the air inlets and evaporator to make sure that they are free of leaves and other debris, as well as removing any plants that have started or continued to grow near the pump.
You may also be advised to check you central heating pressure gauge from time to time and to use anti-freeze to prevent the ASHP from freezing over during winter.
How much can you save?
How much you are likely to save will be fully dependent on the system that you currently use, as well as the system that you plan on replacing it with. This will be affected by factors such as;
BUS Scheme - Eligibility checker
To be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) and to qualify for the £7500 Grant, properties are required to have a valid EPC. A valid EPC means the most recent EPC issued for the property and one which is less than 10 years old.
Due to the size of the property a heat loss survey is required to correctly size the heat pump and confirm the type of heat pump required.
The cost of this is £150.00 and is fully refundable against an order of an Air Source Heat Pump. This will determine the size of the heat pump, the size of the cylinder required and if any radiator or pipework changes are required. All of these factors may alter the quote, but a fixed price firm quotation will be given after the heat loss survey has been completed.
We install all major brands of heat pumps, but having been in the industry since 2010, we are especially impressed with the Midea, which we offer. We are confident that the Midea is one of, if not the best heat pump on the market and includes a 10 year warranty.

Please be aware that heat pumps and installation methods vary in quality and effectiveness. While we won't delve deeply into the intricacies of heat pump installations, it's essential to highlight critical aspects often overlooked by both installers and customers when selecting or designing a heat pump system.
Here's a brief overview:
Distinguishing Heat Pump Brands: Heat pump brands exhibit differences in performance, particularly in efficiency when modulating below 70%. Identifying the most efficient brand is crucial, and we can provide insights into the superior attributes of the brand we recommend.
Ensuring Appropriate Heat Pump Sizing: Striking the perfect balance in determining the size of a heat pump is a meticulous undertaking. Both under-sizing and over-sizing can have pronounced effects on system efficiency and durability, underscoring the imperative of exact sizing and the implementation of strategic buffer tanks. If deliberate over-sizing is deemed necessary, it is crucial to adhere to specific installation practices to ensure optimal performance.
Addressing Multiple Heat Zones: Careful planning is required to avoid multi-cycling issues in systems with multiple heat zones, as this can lead to much higher operational costs and a reduced heat pump lifespan. Our designs incorporate strategies to mitigate these challenges.
Tailoring Weather Compensation Curves: Weather compensation curves must be tailored for each property type to ensure efficient heating. Setting these curves accurately is vital to reach the thermostat's target temperature without compromising efficiency.
Efficient Hot Water Regeneration: Particularly in cold weather, attention to the duration cycles of hot water regeneration is vital. Proper settings are necessary to ensure a consistent hot water supply and maintain temperatures in the home.
Achieving Adequate Water Flow Rates: Achieving the required water flow rates is often overlooked during installations. Our team meticulously measures and optimizes flow rates to meet system specifications.
Selecting the Appropriate Filter: The filter's role in protecting the heat pump is significant. Careful consideration is given to selecting filters that strike a balance between protection and maintaining optimal flow for system longevity.
While these are some of the fundamental technical considerations, there are numerous other intricate aspects to be mindful of. The intention is not to cause concern but to emphasize the variability in quotes, installations, and heat pumps available. Should you wish, we are more than happy to provide a detailed discussion regarding the heat pumps we've proposed, including its specific design.
